Sector: Hybrid Renewable Energy System

Services: Electrical Support

Project Overview

The Mary’s Harbour Microgrid is a pioneering hybrid energy system designed to power a remote community in Labrador. By integrating multiple renewable assets with the existing diesel grid, this project reduces the community’s reliance on fossil fuels. We are working alongside St Mary's River Energy and Natural Forces to provide comprehensive maintenance services for this complex microgrid.

Our Scope

We provide ongoing maintenance and operational support to ensure the reliability and longevity of this critical infrastructure. Our scope covers the battery, solar, hydro, and diesel integration components:

  • Solar PV (189 kW AC): Panel inspection, cleaning, racking integrity checks, and inverter maintenance.

  • Battery Energy Storage (334.5 kW / 669 kWh): Lithium-ion battery health monitoring, thermal management checks, and capacity testing.

  • Microgrid Controls: Calibrating the predictive weather technology and controller logic that manages the diesel-off operation.

  • Emergency Response: Rapid troubleshooting to ensure power quality and grid stability are never compromised.

Supporting Remote Communities & Energy Resilience

maintaining this hybrid system is vital for ensuring energy security in a remote environment. Our work helps Mary’s Harbour:

  • Sustain Diesel Reductions: Ensuring the system consistently displaces ~30% of annual diesel consumption.

  • Maximize Uptime: Preventing downtime in the renewable assets to maximize the periods of “diesel-off” operation.

  • Protect Assets: Extending the operational life of the lithium-ion batteries and hydro-mechanical equipment through rigorous care.

  • Guarantee Power Quality: Ensuring the microgrid controller seamlessly balances renewable generation with community load.

Impact & Vision

The Mary’s Harbour Renewables Project serves as a blueprint for remote communities across Canada looking to transition away from diesel dependency. By successfully maintaining this sophisticated mix of Solar, Hydro, and Storage, we are demonstrating that renewable microgrids can offer the same reliability as traditional grids—even in harsh northern climates.

We are proud to partner with Natural Forces Solar and the Town of Mary’s Harbour to keep this landmark project running at peak performance.
